You’re halfway through a code review when Claude tells you to wait. Before spending $100 a month on Claude Max, find out what stopped you. A five-hour cap, a weekly cap and a conversation that has grown too long each call for a different fix.
This guide compares Claude pricing for individual accounts, explains how chat and coding share an allowance, and shows how to decide whether an upgrade will save you enough time to justify the bill.
Compare Claude plans
I checked Anthropic’s published Claude pricing on November 7, 2026. The table compares Claude plans for individual web subscriptions in U.S. dollars before tax.
| Plan | Web price | Usage and best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited five-hour and weekly usage for occasional chat |
| Pro | $20 per month | Baseline paid allowance with access to the coding tool |
| Claude Max | $100 per month | Five times Pro’s allowance every five hours and every week |
| Ultra | $200 per month | Ten times Pro’s weekly allowance. Verified accounts can use it without a five-hour cap. |
With annual Claude pricing, you pay $200 upfront for Claude Pro. That saves $40 over twelve monthly payments.
These Claude subscription plans are for individuals. If you’re budgeting for a company, check Claude pricing for business seats and any usage charges.
Which usage limit are you hitting?
Two main usage limits apply to the Claude Max plan. Your first message starts the five-hour window. The weekly allowance resets on the same day and time each week. Chat in Claude AI and coding in Visual Studio Code draw from the same allowance when you use the same subscription.
Current Claude pricing lists the former Max 20x tier as Ultra. If you’re on Ultra, check Settings → Usage for a Current session bar. Anthropic removes that bar and the five-hour cap when it verifies your account. The weekly cap still applies.
The same Claude pricing tier can go further on short chats than on coding sessions with large files. Each conversation also has a length limit. If a thread grows too long, start a fresh one with a short summary of your progress.
Under current Claude pricing, Fable can use up to half the weekly allowance on Max and Ultra. If you rely on Fable, watch its bar alongside the overall weekly bar.
Claude Code pricing and how billing works

When comparing Claude Code plans, check your sign-in before a long job. Paid individual Claude subscription plans cover coding in the terminal and supported editors such as PyCharm and IntelliJ IDEA. Run /login to select your subscription account. If your shell sets ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, the key takes precedence and API charges go to its account.
Claude pricing for API calls
The API bills for input and output tokens, the units used to measure what you send and what the model generates. Rates vary by model, and caching and some tools affect the total. Try a typical request in Postman and check its cost in the Console before sending a large batch.
Factor credits into Claude pricing if you use the API. Eligible subscribers can claim $100 per month with Claude Max or $200 with Ultra. New subscribers can link a Console organization in Settings → Billing after seven days.
Paying to continue after a limit
Claude Code pricing can include overage charges if you turn on paid usage credits and continue past your allowance. These charges follow standard API rates and use a separate balance from the included API credit. Open Settings → Usage and choose how much you’re willing to spend each month. Add the actual overage to your subscription fee when comparing Claude pricing.
When does Claude Max pay off?
Start with the difference in Claude pricing. Moving from $20 monthly to $100 adds $80 before tax. If waiting costs two billable hours a month at $45 an hour, recovering both hours would be worth $90. Check whether the added allowance would give you those hours back.
Claude pricing looks different if you already pay for the API. Say you spend $20 on Pro and $40 a month on eligible platform calls. Your combined cost is $60. If the $100 tier’s claimed credits cover those calls, the upgrade costs you $40 more per month. Count the credit based on what you already spend or expect to use.
When to consider Ultra
At the top of individual Claude pricing, Ultra costs $100 more a month than Max. Confirm account verification before budgeting for the removal of five-hour limits. If you keep hitting the weekly cap, estimate how much work you could finish with the extra weekly allowance.
Test a normal week before you upgrade

Before moving to a higher Claude pricing tier, start a log just after your weekly reset and work as usual for seven days.
- Pick representative work. Try opening a GitHub pull request with Claude Code, drafting a report with your usual file sizes, or building a prototype if you’re experimenting with vibe coding. A report with your usual file sizes, or a prototype if you’re experimenting with vibe coding.
- Record what interrupted you. On claude.ai, open Settings → Usage. In the coding tool, run
/usage. Write down which limit you reached, when it resets and how long you had to wait. - Compare total costs. Add your subscription fee, usage-credit charges and the dollar value of time lost. Check how your total cost compares with the Claude pricing listed for the next tier. For a one-off spike, estimate what enough credits to finish the job would cost.
Conclusion
Compare Claude pricing with the cost of the interruptions you recorded. If recurring limits delay paid work, try Claude Max for one billing cycle. Mark your renewal date and check how much time the upgrade saved before deciding whether to keep it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude free?
Yes. The free tier supports everyday chat within usage limits. Paid Claude pricing starts at $20 a month for Pro, with a larger allowance and coding access.
Does Claude pricing differ on mobile?
It can. The table uses web prices. If you subscribe through a mobile app, check the amount shown before confirming payment.
Do unused monthly API credits roll over?
Unused monthly credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. Check the balance and expiry date in Console Billing. When you estimate Claude pricing for a batch, deduct only the credit available on the day it runs.
Does Claude pricing require a yearly commitment?
The paid individual tiers are available month to month. Cancel through the platform where you subscribed at least 24 hours before the next billing date. You keep access through the current paid period.
